The 9th ASAMU Dinner was held on Saturday, 9th May, at Silver Springs Hotel, Bugolobi, under the theme “Capitalising on Change: Why ESG Matters for the Next Generation of Business Leaders.” The event brought together students, alumni, academics and industry professionals to celebrate the growth and impact of the Accounting Students Association of Makerere University. This year’s dinner was particularly significant as it coincided with ASAMU’s 25th anniversary, marking a major milestone in the association’s contribution to student leadership, professional development and accounting education at Makerere University Business School.
The dinner was graced by distinguished guests, including Prof. Mindra Katorogo, Deputy Principal of MUBS; Prof. Irene Nalukenge, Dean, Faculty of Commerce; Prof. Rogers Matama; Dr. Kassim Alinda; Ms. Zainabu Nakabuye; and several other invited guests from academia and practice. The DESIRED Project was represented by Ms. Petronella Kirungi, Project Officer.
Beyond the celebration, the event created a meaningful platform for students to interact with professionals, alumni and institutional leaders. It provided opportunities for mentorship, networking and career guidance, while also exposing students to emerging issues such as Environmental, Social and Governance practices in modern business leadership.
The participation of the DESIRED Project aligned strongly with its focus on enhancing the employability of accounting students through industry engagement, professional exposure and Work-Integrated Learning. Through such platforms, students are encouraged to develop not only technical accounting knowledge, but also the broader skills, networks and professional identity required in today’s changing labour market.
The 9th ASAMU Dinner therefore served as both a celebration of ASAMU’s legacy and a reminder of the need to prepare the next generation of accounting professionals for responsible, ethical and sustainable business leadership.
